Columbus Archive

Columbus, Indiana is known for an exceptional collection of modern architecture designed by prominent architects and designers. This project proposes an archive and visitor center that interprets that legacy through a smaller object: the chair.

The archive displays chairs designed by architects represented throughout Columbus, treating furniture as a scaled artifact of larger architectural ideas. The building extends this relationship through a system of ribbons that peel from its mass to form balconies, bookshelves, built-ins, planters, and water features.

Visitors enter from the west and move through a mezzanine where furniture is displayed above and below the circulation path. The exhibition opens onto a balcony overlooking the plaza, framing views toward significant buildings and the activity of the city. The sequence moves from the scale of furniture, through the scale of the building, and ultimately to the architecture of Columbus itself.
